Peter Obi Appeals for Release of Abducted Schoolchildren, Condemns Growing Insecurity

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has made an emotional appeal to the abductors of schoolchildren currently held in captivity, urging them to release the victims in the interest of humanity and compassion.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said he was deeply shocked and heartbroken by images showing the condition of the abducted children, describing the development as a painful reflection of the worsening insecurity confronting the nation.
According to him, the plight of the children underscores the long-term consequences of poor governance, social neglect, and the failure of leadership to address critical societal challenges.
“I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted schoolchildren are, as seen from their flagellated bodies. It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land,” Obi said.
The former presidential candidate reiterated his longstanding warning that the neglect and abuse of society by leaders today would eventually have devastating consequences for future generations.
“I have always made it clear that the society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow. When I first began making that statement, some of these children were not even born,” he stated.
Drawing a parallel between insecurity and economic management, Obi argued that decisions made by leaders today often impose heavy burdens on future generations. He noted that just as unchecked borrowing creates obligations that children will inherit, poor governance also creates social conditions that expose them to danger.
Describing the situation as a tragic example of governance failure, Obi said the suffering of the abducted children should serve as a wake-up call to leaders at all levels.
Addressing the abductors directly, Obi made a passionate plea for mercy and compassion, reminding them that the victims are innocent children whose families have invested their hopes and dreams in them.
“These are innocent children—sons and daughters of people who have placed their hopes, dreams, and entire future in them. In every one of them, you will find reflections of your own children, your own family, and your own humanity,” he said.
The former governor stressed that no grievance, hardship, or circumstance could justify harming innocent children, adding that there was still an opportunity for those responsible to demonstrate remorse and compassion.
“No grievance, no hardship, no justification can ever outweigh the sanctity of a child’s life and innocence,” Obi stated.
He concluded by calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the children, urging their captors to allow them return safely to their families and communities.
“I therefore appeal to your sense of mercy: release these children immediately. Let them go. Return them safely to society to reunite with their families.”
The appeal comes amid growing national concern over the resurgence of school abductions and the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country. The condition of some of the kidnapped children, as seen in recently circulated images and videos, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for urgent action to secure their freedom and improve the protection of schools across Nigeria.
In his intervention, Peter Obi framed the tragedy not only as a security challenge but also as evidence of the long-term consequences of governance failures, urging both compassion from the abductors and greater responsibility from those in leadership.
