2027: Surulere I Reps Aspirant, Dr. Adefolaseye Pushes for Health Sector Reforms, Accountability.

Dr. Adefolaseye Adebomi Adebayo, South West Coordinator of the OK Movement and House of Representatives aspirant for Surulere I Federal Constituency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s health sector through prudent management, transparency, and stronger legislative oversight.

Speaking shortly after undergoing the party’s screening process, Dr. Adebayo commended the NDC leadership for conducting what she described as a credible, transparent and people-oriented screening exercise capable of strengthening internal democracy within the party.

Speaking to COPDEM Media TV at the NDC screening ground at Bon Hotel, Jabi Abuja, Dr. Adebayo reeled out the core thrust of her manifesto, which she said is centered on quality medical legislative oversight, accountability in healthcare budgeting, and the provision of basic healthcare services at the grassroots level.

She further applauded the party’s commitment toward inclusiveness, particularly the proposed 30 percent quota for women, youths and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), describing it as a bold step toward building a more representative and participatory political system.

According to her, the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on giving greater opportunities to competent women and young people who possess the energy, vision and integrity required to drive meaningful development across the country.

Addressing the state of healthcare delivery in Surulere and Nigeria at large, Dr. Adebayo lamented the poor condition of many public hospitals, inadequate medical facilities, shortage of healthcare personnel, and the rising cost of accessing quality medical treatment.

She noted that despite huge annual budgetary allocations to the health sector, ordinary Nigerians continue to suffer avoidable deaths, overcrowded hospitals, poor maternal healthcare, and inadequate emergency response systems due to corruption, diversion of public funds, and weak institutional oversight.

The Surulere I aspirant emphasized the urgent need to establish standard and functional Primary Health Care Centres in every ward within the constituency, stressing that quality healthcare must begin at the grassroots level where the majority of Nigerians reside.

According to her, strengthening primary healthcare systems would significantly reduce pressure on tertiary hospitals, improve maternal and child healthcare, promote preventive medicine, and ensure that vulnerable citizens receive timely medical attention.

Dr. Adebayo also vowed to prioritize healthcare-related legislation that would improve funding transparency, ensure accountability in the management of health budgets, and guarantee effective monitoring of projects executed with public funds.

She stated that one of her core legislative priorities at the National Assembly would be to champion aggressive oversight functions aimed at probing the alleged massive looting and mismanagement of healthcare allocations over the years.

She maintained that funds budgeted for hospitals, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare infrastructure must directly benefit Nigerians rather than disappear through corrupt practices and inflated contracts.

The NDC chieftain further assured that if elected into the House of Representatives, she would work closely with relevant stakeholders, medical professionals, development agencies and community leaders to promote policies capable of rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Dr. Adebayo reaffirmed her commitment to people-oriented representation, insisting that leadership must be centered on service delivery, accountability, compassion and measurable impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.

She concluded by urging residents of Surulere I and Nigerians generally to support visionary leadership capable of transforming critical sectors such as healthcare, education and social welfare for the benefit of future generations.
