Bayelsa Erupts as Top Politicians Join NDC

A carnival-like celebration swept across parts of Bayelsa State as supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) gathered in large numbers to welcome prominent political figures into the party.

The colourful reception, held in Yenagoa, marked the formal entry of Architect Reuben Okoya, Diepreye Leghemo, and Esther Saiyou into the NDC amid growing political realignments ahead of future elections.

Thousands of supporters, youths, women, party faithful, and community stakeholders reportedly participated in the event, chanting solidarity songs, waving banners, and celebrating what many described as a new political movement for Bayelsa and Nigeria at large.

Speaking during the gathering, Okoya and Leghemo expressed appreciation to the leadership of the NDC for providing what they called a credible platform dedicated to democratic reform, accountability, and national development.

The new entrants particularly praised former Bayelsa State governor and senator Henry Seriake Dickson, described by party supporters as the national leader of the NDC, for what they termed his courage and vision in establishing the party during a critical period in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to them, the emergence of the NDC has revived hope among Nigerians seeking purposeful leadership, transparent governance, and a stronger democratic culture.

The politicians also argued that the increasing support for the party across Bayelsa and other parts of the country demonstrates growing public desire for an alternative political direction capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

Observers say the defection of the political figures represents a significant boost for the NDC’s growing influence in Bayelsa politics, particularly as opposition parties and emerging coalitions intensify grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 elections.

State chairman of the party, Dauperebo Ikuromo, used the occasion to hail Senator Dickson as a defender of multiparty democracy in Nigeria, praising his role in promoting political plurality and opposition engagement.

Ikuromo expressed optimism that more influential politicians, grassroots mobilizers, and community leaders would continue to join the party in the coming months.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Suru Oyarede and Chief Nengi Talboth, representing the Bayelsa West and Bayelsa East caucuses respectively, urged politicians across the state to align with the NDC, insisting the party was gaining momentum toward future electoral success.

The event also featured the presence of several notable political and community figures, including Chief Nengi James, Hon. Selekebina Saboh, and Comrade Doubara Kumokou.

As celebrations continued late into the day, party members reaffirmed their commitment to building what they described as a united political movement focused on development, inclusiveness, and service to the people.
