Viral Videos Show Police Harassing Workers and Barbers

Fresh outrage has erupted across Nigeria following the circulation of disturbing videos showing men in uniforms of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly harassing construction workers and young barbers in separate incidents.

The clips, which surfaced online between April 29 and 30, capture officers stopping individuals going about their daily activities, with some footage showing aggressive behavior and verbal threats. In one widely shared video, an officer is heard in pidgin English warning that he would shoot a suspect attempting to flee, while others were seen demanding money from a group of young men reportedly on their way to offer free haircuts in their community.

The videos, including compilations of rough handling and intimidation, have garnered thousands of views across social media platforms, prompting Nigerians to tag senior police authorities and demand immediate investigations and reforms.

Public reaction has been swift and intense, with many users expressing frustration over what they describe as persistent patterns of extortion and abuse of power by law enforcement personnel. The incidents have reignited memories of the #EndSARS protests, a nationwide movement that called for an end to police brutality and accountability for misconduct.

Although the authenticity of all the clips and the exact circumstances surrounding each incident are yet to be independently verified, the consistency of the allegations has raised serious concerns among civil society groups and rights advocates.

“This is exactly what Nigerians protested against,” one social media user wrote. “Nothing seems to have changed.”

Security analysts note that while isolated misconduct may occur in any institution, repeated publicized incidents can significantly erode trust in law enforcement, particularly in a country where relations between citizens and the police have long been strained.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement addressing the videos. The absence of a prompt response has further fueled public anger, with many calling for disciplinary action against any officers found culpable.

In recent years, the police hierarchy has introduced various reforms aimed at improving professionalism, including training programs and disciplinary measures for erring personnel. However, critics argue that enforcement of these reforms remains inconsistent, allowing misconduct to persist.

Human rights advocates are now urging the authorities to not only investigate the incidents thoroughly but also ensure transparency in the process and accountability for those involved. They stress that rebuilding public trust requires visible action, not just policy declarations.

As the videos continue to circulate, the incidents serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing policing in Nigeria—particularly the urgent need to align conduct on the ground with the principles of justice, accountability, and respect for human rights.
