Nigeria Begins Domestic Oil Refining at Dangote Facility, Ending Decades of Import Dependence

Nigeria has commenced refining its own crude oil domestically for the first time in over six decades, following the start of operations at the Dangote Refinery, owned by industrialist Aliko Dangote.

The facility, described as the world’s largest single-train refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, marks a significant shift for Africa’s largest oil producer, which has historically exported crude oil while relying on imported refined petroleum products.

The development is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign refineries and address longstanding fuel supply challenges.

Speaking at the Africa We Build Summit in Nairobi, Kenyan President William Ruto praised the refinery, noting its potential to resolve Nigeria’s chronic fuel scarcity and strengthen energy security.

Analysts say the milestone could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economy, including savings on fuel importation costs, improved energy stability, and increased industrial growth.

The refinery’s operations are also expected to impact regional fuel supply dynamics across West Africa as production scales up.
