Court Freezes El-Rufai’s Fate: Bail Battle Pushed to June Amid Corruption Charges

The presiding judge, Justice Darius Khobo, fixed the new date following proceedings in the ongoing trial involving the former governor.
Nasir El-Rufai is currently facing multiple charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, bordering on alleged financial crimes, abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
According to the commission, the charges were formally filed on March 18, 2026, under separate case filings before the Kaduna State High Court.
Speaking after the session, defence counsel, Ukpon Akpan, criticized the repeated adjournments, describing them as politically motivated.
Security was visibly heightened around the court premises, with operatives of the Department of State Services and other agencies maintaining order as supporters gathered outside.
The former governor, who arrived in court under security escort, has been in custody since February 19, following earlier interactions with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, before being released on compassionate grounds in March after the death of his mother.
Meanwhile, the defence team maintains that their client is not a flight risk and is willing to meet any bail conditions set by the court, while the prosecution has urged caution, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
Proceedings continue as the court prepares to reconvene in June.
And that’s the latest update. Stay tuned for more.
