Tribute to a Titan: Coach Festus Onigbinde Remembered as a Man of Integrity, Vision, and Lasting Legacy

Nigeria’s sporting community is in mourning following the passing of legendary football coach and administrator Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who died in 2026 at the age of 88. Widely regarded as one of the most principled and influential figures in Nigerian football history, Onigbinde’s legacy continues to resonate far beyond the touchline.

Renowned for his discipline, fairness, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Onigbinde carved out a reputation as a coach who valued merit above all else. His contributions to Nigerian football spanned decades, during which he served both as a national team coach and a respected sports administrator. His impact, however, was not only measured in victories and tournaments but also in the lives he shaped along the way.

One such testimony comes from legal practitioner Abimbola Kumapayi, who shared a personal tribute highlighting the late coach’s profound influence. Recounting his first encounter with Onigbinde at the NTC playing ground in Ibadan, Kumapayi described a moment that would change the course of his football journey.

At the time, Kumapayi was playing for Union Bank Ibadan in the Western Zone while also working at a branch on Lebanon Street in Gbagi. It was during a selection exercise for aspiring footballers that Onigbinde, known for his keen eye for talent, noticed Kumapayi’s exceptional performance.

“Fortunately enough, I was the first to be recognised by him through my outstanding performance,” Kumapayi recalled. “No one could believe I was once a player, but I was—a pioneer set with Union Bank for that matter.”

That recognition proved pivotal. Under Onigbinde’s guidance, Kumapayi was selected to represent his zone in the Union Bank inter-zone competition, marking his first major breakthrough in football. The journey included a memorable trip aboard Nigerian Airways from Lagos to Port Harcourt in 1982—an opportunity he credits entirely to the late coach’s fairness and belief in merit.

Beyond personal anecdotes, Onigbinde’s broader legacy is defined by his steadfast opposition to nepotism and undue influence in sports. Colleagues and former players consistently describe him as a man of integrity—kind yet firm, impartial yet deeply compassionate. His leadership style set a standard that many believe remains unmatched in today’s football administration.

Throughout his career, Onigbinde held positions of national and international repute, earning respect not only within Nigeria but across the global football community. His philosophy emphasized discipline, teamwork, and the development of young talent—principles that helped shape generations of players and administrators.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, many are reflecting on the values he stood for and the void his passing leaves behind. For those who encountered him, whether on the field or through his work, Onigbinde was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a pioneer, and a symbol of what Nigerian sports could aspire to be.

In the words of Kumapayi, “He was kind, impartial, and frank—a man who never believed in shortcuts.”

As Nigeria bids farewell to one of its finest sporting icons, the memory of Coach Festus Onigbinde will endure—etched not only in history books but in the hearts of those he inspired.
