Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has met with Western diplomats in Abuja, a day after attending the convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a significant moment for Nigeria’s democracy.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, took the form of a breakfast engagement focused on strengthening relationships and discussing issues of mutual interest. Among those present were Richard Montgomery and representatives from the European Union, Germany, Canada, and France.
Obi, who joined the ADC in March 2026 following his 2023 presidential bid, has continued to engage both local and international stakeholders as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters have praised his diplomatic engagement and composure, describing it as reflective of presidential leadership. However, some observers have urged the opposition figure to more directly address pressing governance concerns, including Nigeria’s economic challenges and security situation.
The meeting comes amid ongoing political realignments and increased consultations among key actors, as opposition parties position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
