Fresh controversy has emerged following attempts by Nigeria’s electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Nafiu Bala to downplay earlier confirmations surrounding the coalition’s adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections.
A resurfaced public statement attributed to Bala, dated July 3, 2025, explicitly acknowledged that coalition members had formally adopted the ADC. In the same statement, he recognized David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary—positions now at the center of the ongoing dispute.
The statement further affirmed Bala’s role as Deputy National Chairman and emphasized a united commitment within the party to deliver “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership” ahead of the 2027 elections. Observers note that the tone and content of the message leave little ambiguity about the legitimacy of the coalition arrangement at the time.
However, recent developments suggest a sharp reversal. INEC’s posture, alongside Bala’s reported denial of such alignment, has raised concerns among political stakeholders about possible inconsistencies and external pressures influencing the narrative.
Analysts argue that the contradiction between documented public statements and current denials could undermine institutional credibility and erode public trust. They also warn that selective recognition or withdrawal of legitimacy within party structures risks setting a dangerous precedent as the political landscape ahead of 2027 continues to evolve.
Within ADC circles, the issue is being framed as part of a broader struggle over party control and the integrity of coalition agreements. Supporters insist that the earlier declaration stands as evidence of a duly considered and collectively endorsed decision, not one that can be easily disowned.
As tensions rise, attention is now focused on how INEC will reconcile these discrepancies and whether it will provide a clear, consistent position regarding the leadership and structure of the ADC moving forward.
