The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other national institutions to act with caution amid what it described as rising political tensions in the country.
In a statement issued on April 2, the PDP alleged that recent political developments indicate attempts to undermine opposition parties ahead of future elections. The party claimed that the actions have heightened the political atmosphere, raising concerns about the stability of the nation’s democratic process.
The PDP specifically criticized INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark. The party argued that the electoral body’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling in the matter appeared questionable and could further destabilize the political landscape.
According to the PDP, the perceived pattern of decisions by INEC may give the impression of favoring the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), potentially paving the way for an uncontested election. The party also expressed concern over recent monitoring activities by the commission, warning that they could lead to the deregistration of opposition parties.
The opposition party urged INEC and other institutions, including the judiciary and religious bodies, to resist partisan pressures and uphold their constitutional roles. It emphasized the need for impartiality, transparency, and a commitment to democratic principles.
Describing the current period as a critical moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, the PDP called for a “country-first” approach from all stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s political future.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, who appealed for restraint and adherence to the rule of law in handling political matters.
