Breaking: ADC Passes Vote of No Confidence on INEC Chairman, Insists on Party Leadership and Congresses

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally passed a vote of no confidence on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Ojo Amupitan, escalating tensions between the opposition party and the electoral body.
At a high-level world press conference in Abuja, the party—led by David Mark—declared that it no longer trusts INEC to conduct credible elections, accusing the commission of bias and unlawful interference in its internal affairs. The event was attended by key coalition leaders, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside the party’s National Chairman, National Secretary, and the entire National Working Committee (NWC) of the ADC.
The ADC announced key resolutions, including its vote of no confidence in the current INEC leadership and a demand for the immediate resignation or removal of Amupitan and other national commissioners. The party also reaffirmed that the David Mark-led National Working Committee remains the legitimate leadership of the ADC.
In addition, the party declared that it will proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention as planned, insisting that INEC’s presence is not legally required once due notice has been given.
The confrontation follows INEC’s decision to delist key ADC leaders from its official records, citing compliance with a court order to maintain status quo pending legal determination. However, the ADC rejected this interpretation, alleging political interference and warning of attempts to weaken opposition forces ahead of future elections.
The development underscores a widening rift between Nigeria’s electoral umpire and one of the country’s major opposition platforms, raising concerns about electoral neutrality, institutional independence, and the broader trajectory of Nigeria’s democratic process.
