Sowore Criticises Obidient Movement, Sparks Fresh Debate Ahead of 2027

A fresh round of political tension has emerged within Nigeria’s opposition space after activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore described the Obidient Movement associated with Peter Obi as a “political Ponzi scheme.”

Sowore’s remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures increasingly scrutinising one another’s strategies, alliances, and credibility.

The criticism was partly triggered by Obi’s recent visit to Kano on March 22, where he met with Rabiu Kwankwaso. During the visit, supporters were heard chanting “Obi–Kwankwaso,” a development Sowore cited as evidence of inconsistency, noting that Kwankwaso had previously been labelled a saboteur by some Obidient voices.

In response, supporters of the Obidient Movement pushed back strongly, defending Obi as a capable and credible leader. They argued that his political momentum is driven by genuine grassroots support rather than financial inducement, dismissing allegations of paid mobilization.

The exchange has further exposed divisions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, with rival camps increasingly at odds over ideology, alliances, and leadership direction. It also comes alongside unverified claims of inducement tactics from Obi’s camp—allegations that remain unproven—as well as Sowore’s broader critique of governance performance in states led by opposition figures, including Abia under Governor Alex Otti.

Analysts say the growing friction reflects a broader struggle for dominance within the opposition, as political actors begin early positioning for 2027. With competing narratives and intensifying rhetoric, the battle for public trust and political relevance appears to be entering a new phase.
