INEC Insists on Due Process in Altering Party Structures

The Independent National Electoral Commission has reaffirmed that political parties cannot alter their existing leadership or structural arrangements without strictly adhering to constitutional procedures and obtaining the commission’s consent.

The electoral body emphasized that any attempt to change a constituted party structure must comply with the provisions of the party’s constitution and must be formally communicated to and recognized by INEC before it can take effect.

According to the commission’s position, due process remains central to maintaining order, transparency, and legality in the operations of political parties across the country. INEC noted that the internal governance of parties is guided by their constitutions, but any structural changes must also align with the regulatory framework overseen by the commission.

The clarification comes amid ongoing debates and disputes within several political parties regarding leadership arrangements and executive structures.

INEC maintained that without following the required procedures and obtaining the commission’s acknowledgment, any purported changes to a party’s constituted leadership would not be recognized for official purposes.

The commission reiterated that adherence to due process is essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic system and ensuring stability within the country’s political party framework.
