Adamu Atiku Abubakar Resigns as Adamawa Commissioner Following Governor’s Party Switch

Adamawa, March 2, 2026 – Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the eldest son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development. The resignation comes days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on February 27.

Unlike most members of the state executive council who joined the governor in the party switch, Adamu opted to step down, citing principle and loyalty to the PDP. Political observers have interpreted the move as a demonstration of integrity, aligning with his father’s longstanding commitment to the party.

In a statement, Adamu Atiku Abubakar reaffirmed his dedication to the development of Adamawa State, emphasizing that his decision was rooted in both personal conviction and the party’s enduring role in the region’s politics. The resignation has sparked discussions about PDP dynamics in the Northeast as the 2027 general elections approach.

Supporters and commentators have commended Abubakar’s stance, describing him as a “proper son of his father” for maintaining his political principles amid a wave of defections.
