Nigerian music executive Ubi Franklin has said the reality television show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) no longer commands the level of public conversation it once did, although he acknowledged that the franchise remains a successful entertainment brand.
Franklin made the observation in a post on X on Monday, September 28, 2026, while reacting to a comment from fellow entertainment executive Bizzle Osikoya, who said he had forgotten that the reality show was still airing.
Comparing BBNaija with an established music artiste, Franklin said the show still has a substantial audience but no longer occupies the same position in everyday cultural discussions.
“Big Brother Naija reminds me of a massive artist who is still successful, still performing and still has fans, but no longer commands the conversation like before,” Franklin said.
He added that the programme remains a major brand but argued that its cultural influence has changed compared with previous years. Franklin also called for renewed strategic thinking to help the franchise maintain audience interest.
“Sometimes being successful isn’t enough—you have to go back to the drawing board, re-strategize, reposition and find a way to become relevant again,” he said.
The comments have generated discussion about the current relevance of BBNaija, particularly as the entertainment industry becomes increasingly competitive. Social media platforms, streaming services, short-form video and other entertainment options now compete for the attention of Nigerian audiences.
Franklin’s remarks are significant because BBNaija has historically generated extensive social media discussions, celebrity followings and commercial opportunities for contestants. His comments therefore raise questions about how established entertainment franchises can maintain cultural influence as audience habits change.
The 2026 edition, BBNaija Season 11, began with 24 housemates and is scheduled to conclude on October 4. The season reportedly offers a N160 million grand prize, while contestants continue competing for the title and associated opportunities.
Since its Nigerian launch, BBNaija has produced numerous television personalities, influencers and entertainers. Franklin’s assessment adds to the ongoing conversation about the show’s future direction and its place in Nigeria’s evolving entertainment landscape.
