The cleric, who recounted his personal experience during an international trip, said he was harassed and subjected to additional security screening after being identified as a Nigerian. He lamented that the experience illustrated how ordinary citizens could bear the consequences of controversies surrounding their country, even when they have no connection to criminal activity
According to the cleric, the situation has reached a point where the sight of a Nigerian traveler allegedly triggers immediate suspicion among security personnel. He expressed his frustration over what he described as an assumption that a Nigerian could be carrying heroin or cocaine, arguing that such treatment undermines the dignity of innocent Nigerians who travel for legitimate purposes
Concerns Over Nigeria’s International Reputation
The cleric’s complaint comes amid continuing public controversy over allegations concerning President Bola Tinubu’s past dealings in the United States. The debate includes references to a 1993 civil forfeiture proceeding involving approximately $460,000 connected to accounts associated with Tinubu and a wider investigation into heroin trafficking.
However, former presidential aide Reno Omokri stated in September 2026 that he had changed his position, saying his own investigation in the United States found no evidence to support describing Tinubu as a drug lord. He also said the underlying proceeding was a civil forfeiture case rather than a criminal conviction of the president.
