The United Kingdom’s new High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to assume his diplomatic assignment and lead the UK’s mission in the country.
Vowles succeeds Richard Montgomery and takes charge at a time when Nigeria and the United Kingdom are seeking to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, investment, security, development and education. His arrival was announced by the British High Commission on Monday.
Speaking after arriving in Nigeria, Vowles said his immediate priority would be to understand the country by engaging with its people and experiencing its diverse culture.
“I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria. My first priority is to listen and learn,” he said.
He also described the relationship between Nigeria and the UK as a deep and enduring partnership built largely around strong connections between the two countries’ people. Vowles said he looked forward to working with partners across Nigeria to strengthen the relationship and identify new areas of cooperation.
The appointment is significant as Abuja and London continue to expand their bilateral partnership. Recent discussions between Nigerian and British officials have focused on trade and investment, security, development, education and support for Nigerian businesses seeking access to the UK market.
Vowles brings extensive diplomatic and development experience to his new position. Before his appointment to Nigeria, he served as the UK’s ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026 and previously held the ambassadorial position in Myanmar. He has also held senior roles within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
The UK government announced Vowles’ appointment in June 2026, naming him as Montgomery’s successor. The British High Commission said his experience would support continued engagement between both countries.
His arrival comes shortly after renewed commitments by Nigerian and British officials to strengthen their longstanding partnership, setting the stage for further diplomatic engagement under his tenure.
