The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack on its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, describing the incident as a threat to democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party alleged that armed hoodlums disrupted the meeting on Saturday, September 12, with sporadic shooting, leaving attendees injured. The Enugu State Police Command confirmed that two people were injured and said an investigation had been ordered into the incident.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC accused suspected state-sponsored political thugs of attacking its members. The party said political organisations have a constitutional right to hold peaceful meetings and mobilise supporters.
“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” the party said, insisting that intimidation would not prevent it from participating in the 2027 elections.
The NDC also criticised security agencies for what it described as inadequate responses to attacks involving opposition activities in Enugu and other parts of the South-East. It called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible, including anyone found to have sponsored the alleged violence.
The development is significant as political parties intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections. Incidents of violence at political gatherings could raise concerns about the safety of party members and supporters, as well as the broader environment for political participation.
The party further alleged that similar attacks had occurred during its activities in Imo State, including a town hall meeting involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
Meanwhile, the police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the Enugu incident and identify those responsible. The outcome could determine whether criminal charges will follow.
The alleged attack adds to concerns about political violence as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, with parties expected to expand campaigns and grassroots mobilisation across the country.
