The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged journalists to deepen their knowledge of Nigeria’s electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections to promote accurate reporting and reduce disputes that could lead to litigation.
The Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Saidu Ahmed, made the call while speaking on the need for journalists and media practitioners to properly understand the legal and procedural framework governing elections.
Ahmed stressed the importance of journalists being adequately equipped with knowledge of electoral laws, procedures and the responsibilities of relevant stakeholders. He noted that a proper understanding of the election process would enable the media to report developments more accurately and responsibly.
The INEC commissioner’s appeal comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. Journalists are expected to play a crucial role in providing voters with verified information, explaining electoral procedures and holding political actors and institutions accountable.
The call is particularly significant because inaccurate or incomplete reporting of electoral procedures can contribute to public misunderstanding and increase tensions surrounding election results. A well-informed media, however, can help citizens distinguish between verified information, political claims and misinformation.
Beyond election-day coverage, journalists are expected to understand important stages of the electoral cycle, including voter registration, party primaries, candidate nomination, accreditation, voting, collation and the declaration of results. Knowledge of the relevant legal provisions can also help reporters provide clearer coverage of election-related disputes.
Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are expected to be highly competitive, with political parties already positioning themselves for the contest. As preparations continue, stakeholders have repeatedly emphasised the importance of credible information, responsible journalism and public awareness in strengthening the electoral process.
INEC’s latest message therefore highlights the media’s role not only as a source of election news but also as an important partner in promoting transparency, informed participation and confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
