Kwankwaso Condemns Killing of Kano Political Commentator Dan Shagamu, Demands Immediate Probe

Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned the gruesome killing of popular Kano-based social media political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, and called for an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Dan Shagamu, popularly known as Dan-Shagamu International, was reportedly found dead in a pool of blood at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. Reports said he had been unreachable before his body was discovered.
Kwankwaso, reacting to the incident, described the killing as deeply disturbing and urged the Kano State Government to immediately constitute an investigative panel to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
He warned that failure by the authorities to take decisive and transparent action would not end the matter, declaring that an incoming NDC administration would, upon assuming office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold perpetrators accountable.
“I am deeply disturbed by the killing of the renowned social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of his blood at his home in Kano,” Kwankwaso said.
He further called on the Kano and Federal Governments to strengthen the protection of opposition voices, stressing that freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed and must protect citizens from threats, attacks and intimidation.
Dan Shagamu was known for his Hausa-language political, religious and community commentary and had been critical of both state and federal authorities. Reports also indicate that he had previously raised concerns about threats to his life.
Amnesty International Nigeria has also condemned the killing and demanded a thorough investigation, warning about growing reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The motive for the killing has not been officially established, and authorities have yet to publicly confirm whether the murder was politically motivated. Some reports have indicated arrests, but the circumstances and status of any suspects remain unclear.
Kwankwaso extended his condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends and followers, praying that Almighty Allah grants him Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.
The killing has heightened concerns over the safety of journalists, political commentators, activists and other Nigerians expressing dissenting political views as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Refine the report.
