The Lagos State Government has introduced a new requirement for school admission, making registration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) mandatory for learners enrolling in all public and private schools across the state.
The directive will take effect from Monday, September 14, 2026, as part of the requirements for admission and enrolment during the 2026/2027 academic session. Schools have been instructed to obtain and record the valid LASRRA registration number of every learner in their admission and school records.
The policy is being implemented by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) following approval by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun.
According to the commissioner, the initiative is designed to help the state build a comprehensive and verifiable database of learners. He said having accurate information about pupils and students would strengthen education planning, monitoring and service delivery.
The government also expects the database to improve learner identification, verification and tracking while providing agencies with reliable information for evidence-based decisions.
Under the new arrangement, schools are expected to sensitise parents and guardians about the requirement and advise families whose children are yet to register with LASRRA to complete the process before the new academic session begins.
The government has, however, directed schools to protect learners’ personal information and ensure that data collected through the process is handled securely and confidentially in line with applicable data-protection requirements.
OEQA Director-General, Dr Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, said the agency would work with LASRRA and other relevant bodies to develop procedures for generating and assigning unique personal identification numbers to learners. Registration, verification and sensitisation support will also be provided to schools and families.
The development is important because the government says reliable learner data can help determine education needs, allocate resources and monitor service delivery more effectively.
LASRRA itself says its residents database is intended to help the state plan adequately for residents and allocate resources according to identified needs.
Parents and school proprietors have therefore been urged to complete the registration process ahead of the September 14 commencement date.
