Arise News anchor Rufai Oseni has reaffirmed his commitment to holding people in positions of authority accountable, saying he will continue to speak out despite opposition and criticism.
Oseni made the declaration after a heated exchange with Lere Olayinka, media aide to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, during a live edition of The Morning Show.
The confrontation began after Oseni questioned Olayinka about the inclusion of former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu in a presidential campaign council despite corruption allegations previously levelled against her. Olayinka declined to answer the question and objected to Oseni’s use of a Yoruba expression. The interview was subsequently brought to an end.
Following the incident, Oseni took to social media to thank Nigerians who contacted him and expressed support. He said the reaction had strengthened his determination to continue advocating for Nigerians and challenging perceived injustice.
“I will continue to speak truth to power despite opposition from people benefiting from the ruination of Nigeria,” Oseni stated.
The journalist also explained that his commitment was rooted in his understanding of Nigerian history. He referenced late labour leader Pa Michael Imoudu and the 1945 general strike, saying historical struggles had shaped his conviction to stand up for what he considers right.
“A lot of people ask what is my conviction in fighting for a better Nigeria and I tell them history,” Oseni said.
The development is important because it has renewed debate about the relationship between journalists and political figures, particularly during live interviews. It also raises questions about whether public officials and their representatives should be expected to respond to difficult questions from journalists.
The disagreement comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, making media scrutiny of politicians and government representatives increasingly prominent.
Oseni acknowledged that he could make mistakes but maintained that speaking truth to power would remain central to his work.
