A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ibrahim Modibbo, has expressed strong confidence that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Modibbo made the prediction while appearing on AIT’s Democracy Today programme, where he argued that Atiku possesses the political experience, national reach and support base needed to challenge the incumbent president.
According to the ADC chieftain, Atiku’s political profile places him ahead of other contenders in the race, including Tinubu.
“Atiku is one politician today that can’t be rivalled by any politician including the president,” Modibbo said.
He went further to make a striking prediction about the election, declaring: “Let me repeat again, President Bola Tinubu will be defeated before 8 o’clock on the day of the election.”
The statement comes amid growing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) preparing to defend its hold on the presidency and opposition parties seeking to build a strong challenge.
Modibbo’s comments are significant because they reflect the confidence within the ADC camp surrounding Atiku’s candidacy. However, his prediction remains a political assertion, and the eventual outcome will depend on voter decisions, party structures, campaign performance and the conduct of the election.
The ADC has previously maintained that Atiku can win the 2027 presidential election without relying on a broad opposition coalition. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party was working towards victory on its own platform.
Tinubu and Atiku are already familiar figures in Nigeria’s presidential contests. In 2023, Tinubu defeated Atiku and Peter Obi, securing more than eight million votes, while Atiku finished second.
With the 2027 election approaching, statements from both ruling-party and opposition camps are expected to intensify as candidates attempt to demonstrate their electoral strength and appeal to voters nationwide.
