A viral video making the rounds on social media has sparked outrage after activist and social commentator MC Okrika confronted police officers over allegations of illegal checkpoints, extortion and assault of a young Nigerian.
In the video, Okrika is seen challenging officers dressed in what appeared to be non-standard police attire and allegedly without visible name tags, demanding answers over the treatment of a young man reportedly stopped at the checkpoint.
Okrika alleged that the officers collected ₦150,000 from the young man and physically assaulted him during the encounter. He questioned the legality of the checkpoint and demanded that the money allegedly collected from the victim be returned.
The confrontation reportedly occurred in Ikom, Cross River State, with the video attracting significant attention online and prompting renewed concerns over allegations of extortion and brutality at checkpoints.
The activist also questioned the identities and authority of the officers, particularly their alleged failure to display visible identification.
The incident has reignited public debate over the continued complaints of illegal checkpoints, roadside extortion and alleged abuse of power by some security personnel.
However, the allegations contained in the video have not yet been independently established, and the identities of the officers, the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment and the legality of the checkpoint require investigation by the appropriate authorities.
