Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has sparked fresh conversations among Nigerian music fans after claiming that he knew British-Nigerian producer and singer Maleek Berry before his longstanding industry rival, Wizkid.
Davido made the statement during an appearance on the +44 Podcast, where he reflected on his early experiences in London and his connection with Maleek Berry.
Recalling his younger years, the singer said London played an important role in his early journey and claimed that he met Maleek Berry during that period.
“The first place I came to when I ran away from home is London. I was with Maleek Berry. Ask him, I’m the first person to know Maleek Berry,” Davido said.
The comment has attracted particular attention because of Maleek Berry’s well-known association with Wizkid. The producer has worked with the Ojuelegba singer on several projects and became part of the wider music circle surrounding Wizkid during the early stages of his career.
Davido’s claim has consequently been interpreted by some fans within the context of his long-running rivalry with Wizkid.
