Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has paid a traditional homage to his elder brother, Dr Adedeji Adeleke, father of Afrobeats star Davido, following his successful re-election in the August 15 governorship election.
A video circulating online showed the governor prostrating before his elder brother during a visit on Wednesday. Adedeji Adeleke received him warmly and offered prayers for his younger brother and his administration.
The visit came shortly after Adeleke received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo.
The gesture attracted public attention not only because of Adeleke’s position as governor but also because of its cultural significance. Prostrating before an elder is a longstanding Yoruba tradition associated with respect and humility, and the footage generated reactions across social media.
Adedeji Adeleke, a businessman and proprietor of Adeleke University, had openly supported his younger brother during the election campaign. Following the governor’s victory, he revealed that he had relied heavily on prayers during the tense election period.
At a victory celebration, the elder Adeleke said he prayed that voters would collect whatever money was offered to them but still vote according to their conscience.
Governor Adeleke has also described his elder brother as an important adviser and father figure. He previously said that seeing his brother reminded him of their late father.
The development is significant because the Adeleke family has become an increasingly prominent force in Osun politics, with the governor’s political career receiving considerable public attention and Davido also taking an active interest in his uncle’s campaigns.
INEC declared Adeleke the winner of the August 15 election with 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.
Adeleke’s latest gesture highlights the blend of family support, cultural tradition and political success surrounding his second-term victory as he prepares to continue leading Osun State.
