Abuja, Nigeria — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to contest the 2027 presidential election, promising disciplined leadership, economic revival, and institutional reforms aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television, Obi said his ambition is driven by a desire to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges rather than a quest for political power.
Reaffirms 2027 Presidential Bid
Obi confirmed that he will seek the presidency in 2027, maintaining that Nigeria urgently needs competent, transparent, and accountable leadership capable of restoring public confidence and delivering measurable results.
Renews One-Term Commitment
The former Anambra State governor reiterated his pledge to serve only one term if elected, explaining that he would faithfully honour any political agreement founded on equity, fairness, justice, and national unity. He said keeping such commitments is essential to building trust and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Criticises Economic Policies
Obi faulted the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy, arguing that soaring inflation, the depreciation of the naira, rising unemployment, and the escalating cost of living have deepened the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
He advocated a transition from a consumption-driven economy to one anchored on production, industrialisation, agriculture, manufacturing, exports, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises, insisting that these sectors hold the key to sustainable economic growth and job creation.
Calls for Stronger Security Leadership
On insecurity, Obi described the protection of lives and property as the foremost responsibility of government. He urged authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve coordination among security agencies, equip security personnel adequately, and provide decisive leadership to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
Advocates Transparent and Compassionate Governance
The former governor accused the current administration of failing to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians. He argued that effective governance must be rooted in transparency, prudent management of public resources, accountability, compassion, and policies that directly improve citizens’ living standards.
Obi also reiterated his long-held position that public office is a sacred trust, stressing that corruption and waste undermine national development.
Supports Opposition Coalition
On opposition politics, Obi welcomed collaboration among opposition parties and stakeholders, stating that any coalition should be guided by patriotism, national interest, and the shared objective of rescuing Nigeria through good governance rather than personal political ambition.

Throughout the interview, Obi presented a vision centred on economic recovery, improved security, accountable leadership, institutional reform, and inclusive national development. He maintained that Nigeria possesses the resources and human capital to prosper but requires disciplined leadership, prudent resource management, and policies that promote production, investment, and shared prosperity.
