Senate Approves Bill Seeking to Change NAICOM’s Name in Insurance Sector Reform

The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill seeking to change the name of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to the Nigerian Insurance Regulatory Authority, in a move aimed at strengthening the regulation and supervision of the country’s insurance industry.

The proposed legislation was passed after lawmakers considered the bill and debated the need to improve the regulatory structure governing Nigeria’s insurance sector.

If the bill eventually becomes law, the new authority is expected to retain the responsibility of overseeing insurance operators while adopting a revised institutional framework. The proposed name change is also intended to better reflect the regulator’s role in supervising the industry and enforcing compliance with relevant laws.

The Senate’s action is important because NAICOM is a key institution within Nigeria’s financial system. It is responsible for regulating insurance companies, protecting policyholders and promoting the stability and growth of the insurance market.

The proposed reform comes at a time when stakeholders are seeking ways to increase insurance penetration in Nigeria. Despite the country’s large population and expanding economy, many individuals and businesses remain without adequate insurance coverage.

Supporters of the proposed legislation believe a stronger regulatory framework could improve confidence in the sector and encourage greater participation from investors and members of the public. It could also help strengthen corporate governance and ensure that insurance operators meet regulatory requirements.

However, the Senate’s passage of the bill represents only one stage of the legislative process. Further legislative steps and other constitutional requirements must be completed before the proposed name change can take effect.

NAICOM was established under the National Insurance Commission Act of 1997 to regulate and supervise insurance business in Nigeria. Over the years, the commission has introduced various reforms aimed at improving industry standards and protecting policyholders.
