Abuja, July 21, 2026 — The legal team representing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly condemned comments made during a television broadcast in which a guest allegedly called on the Federal Government to kill Kanu, describing the statement as reckless, unlawful, and a threat to the rule of law.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Special Counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, said the remarks were made by Mr. Chigozie Nnabugwu during a programme aired by News Central TV on July 19, 2026. According to the legal team, the clip was subsequently published on the broadcaster’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account and widely circulated online.
The lawyers argued that the alleged call for Kanu’s extrajudicial killing constitutes a serious threat to life and has the potential to incite violence and undermine public order.
The statement further contended that such remarks could attract legal consequences under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, as well as other applicable criminal laws relating to incitement to violence. The legal team also asserted that broadcasting content of that nature could expose the television station to possible regulatory scrutiny under applicable broadcasting standards.
According to the press release, urging the execution of an individual whose case remains before the courts could also interfere with ongoing judicial proceedings and potentially amount to contempt of court.
Kanu’s legal representatives disclosed that they are reviewing available legal options, including filing formal complaints with the appropriate authorities.
They demanded that Mr. Nnabugwu immediately retract the alleged statement publicly, while also calling on News Central TV to issue an unreserved televised apology for airing the comments.
The legal team warned that the press release serves as a pre-action notice and indicated that legal proceedings may follow if the demands are not met.

News Central TV and Mr. Chigozie Nnabugwu had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of this report.
