A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step back from active presidential politics and embrace the role of a statesman, arguing that the time has come for a new generation of leaders to shape Nigeria’s political future.
The APC stalwart made the remarks while commenting on the country’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election. According to him, Atiku’s decades-long political career has earned him a place in Nigeria’s democratic history, but he should now focus on mentoring younger politicians and contributing to national development through statesmanship rather than seeking elective office.
He argued that Nigeria requires fresh leadership ideas and broader opportunities for emerging political figures, adding that experienced politicians can continue to influence national affairs without necessarily contesting for executive positions.
“Every political career reaches a point where experience should be channelled into nation-building through mentorship and counsel,” the APC chieftain said, urging Atiku to leave behind what he described as the rigours of presidential contests.
