Residents of Nayagota community in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday staged a peaceful protest following the alleged killing of two women by yet-to-be-identified security operatives, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and justice for the victims.
The demonstrators, comprising community members, youth groups, women and local leaders, marched through major roads in the area carrying placards and chanting slogans to express their anger over the reported deaths. Protesters called on the Plateau State Government and security authorities to identify those responsible and ensure they are held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to residents, the two women were allegedly killed during a security operation in the community under circumstances that remain unclear. Witnesses claimed the victims were unarmed civilians, although the identities of the operatives involved and the exact sequence of events had yet to be officially established at the time of the protest.
The incident sparked widespread outrage within the community, with many residents describing the deaths as tragic and unacceptable. They appealed to the authorities to conduct an independent and transparent investigation to establish the facts and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The protest temporarily disrupted vehicular movement in parts of Jos South as demonstrators occupied sections of the road. However, security personnel were deployed to maintain order and ensure that the demonstration remained peaceful.
Reacting to the development, residents appealed to both the federal and Plateau State governments to prioritise the protection of innocent civilians during security operations. They stressed that while security agencies play a vital role in maintaining peace and combating criminality, such responsibilities must always be carried out with professionalism, restraint and respect for human rights.
Human rights advocates have also called for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into the allegations. They noted that accountability in cases involving the use of force by security personnel is essential for maintaining public confidence in law enforcement institutions and upholding the rule of law.
Security analysts observed that allegations involving civilian casualties during security operations often require careful investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. They stressed that due process and credible fact-finding are necessary before responsibility can be conclusively determined.
The latest protest comes amid continuing concerns about security challenges in parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly appealed for stronger protection against violence while urging security agencies to maintain positive relations with local residents.
As investigations are expected to commence, community leaders have appealed for calm and urged residents not to resort to violence or reprisals.
