2027: Peter Obi Signs National Peace Accord, Urges Nigerians to Reject Violent Politicians

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, joined other political leaders and presidential candidates in signing the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections in Abuja.
The accord, facilitated by the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, commits political parties, candidates and their supporters to peaceful, issue-based campaigns and the rejection of violence, hate speech, personal attacks, fake news and ethnic or religious incitement.
Obi, who signed the agreement in person, used the occasion to call for a credible, peaceful and violence-free electoral process, stressing that political campaigns should focus on the problems confronting Nigerians rather than personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric.
Speaking after the signing, the former Anambra State governor appealed to political actors to ensure that their conduct reflects the offices they are seeking, urging candidates to campaign on issues affecting the lives and future of Nigerians.
He also called on Nigerians to reject at the ballot box any politician or political party that violates the provisions of the Peace Accord.
Obi particularly condemned the violence associated with the recent Osun State governorship election, saying Nigerians should not have to lose their lives because of elections.
He called for the families of those who died during the electoral process to be remembered and consoled, insisting that democracy must never become a justification for violence or loss of life.
The signing ceremony was held in Abuja ahead of the commencement of the 2027 presidential and National Assembly campaigns. President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, while other presidential candidates, including Omoyele Sowore, Adewole Adebayo and other political actors also participated.
However, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the ADC were notably absent from the ceremony, according to multiple reports.
The 2027 Peace Accord therefore places an additional public commitment on participating candidates to pursue their presidential ambitions through peaceful and democratic means, while leaving voters with the responsibility of judging candidates by their conduct throughout the electioneering period.
