The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Nigeria’s judiciary to uphold its constitutional responsibility and remain impartial as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
In a statement, the opposition party urged judicial officers to safeguard democratic principles by ensuring that electoral disputes and politically sensitive cases are handled strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law. The ADC maintained that the judiciary remains a critical pillar of democracy and should continue to act independently in the discharge of its duties.
According to the party, public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process depends largely on the ability of the courts to deliver fair, transparent, and impartial judgments. The ADC stressed that judicial independence is essential to protecting the integrity of elections and preserving citizens’ trust in democratic institutions.
The party also cautioned against actions that could undermine the credibility of the judiciary, urging judges and other judicial officers to resist external pressure or political influence while carrying out their constitutional functions.
The statement comes as political parties intensify consultations, alliance-building, and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers have noted that the judiciary is expected to play a significant role in resolving pre-election and post-election disputes that may arise during the electoral cycle.
Legal practitioners have also emphasized the importance of judicial neutrality, arguing that adherence to due process and constitutional provisions remains fundamental to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. They noted that independent courts contribute to peaceful elections by providing credible mechanisms for resolving political disagreements.
The Federal Government has consistently maintained its commitment to respecting the independence of the judiciary and supporting democratic institutions as provided under the Constitution.
