Wike’s Remarks on Journalist Spark Outrage, Calls for Apology

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has come under criticism following controversial remarks he made about Channels Television journalist Seun Okinbaloye during a live interview.

The incident occurred during a media chat where Wike reacted strongly to comments made by Okinbaloye on a television programme discussing concerns about a possible drift toward a one-party system in Nigeria. In his response, the minister said he felt like “shooting” the journalist, a remark that quickly sparked public backlash.

Media and civil society groups have condemned the statement, describing it as inappropriate and potentially dangerous. The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN) reportedly called on the minister to issue a public apology and retract the remark, warning that failure to do so could lead to a boycott of his media engagements.

In response to the controversy, Okinbaloye stated that he remains undeterred by the comments. The journalist reaffirmed his commitment to holding public officials accountable, emphasizing that his role is to ask critical questions in the public interest. He also cautioned against the use of inflammatory language, noting that such rhetoric could undermine press freedom and democratic values.

Wike’s office has since clarified that the remark was not intended as a literal threat but rather a figure of speech expressing frustration. His aides described the statement as “hyperbolic” and urged the public to view it within context.

Despite the clarification, the incident has reignited debate about political rhetoric, media independence, and the safety of journalists in Nigeria. Observers say the controversy highlights the need for restraint in public discourse, particularly from senior government officials.
