Violence Escalates in Eastern DR Congo, Forcing Civilians to Flee

Kinshasa, DR Congo- 12th march 2026. Renewed violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes, heightening concerns over the region’s fragile security situation. Armed clashes between rival groups and local militias in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu have intensified over the past week, displacing communities and disrupting essential services.

Reports indicate that dozens of villages have been affected, with homes and marketplaces damaged or destroyed. Humanitarian organizations warn of mounting risks of food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and a growing refugee crisis.

Local authorities have called for calm and requested urgent assistance from national and international agencies. Meanwhile, the UN’s peacekeeping mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) has deployed additional forces to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.

Analysts note that the resurgence of conflict threatens the region’s stability and underscores the ongoing challenges of governance, militia proliferation, and ethnic tensions in eastern DRC.

Humanitarian agencies are urging the international community to provide immediate support to prevent further displacement and safeguard civilian lives.
