Vice President Shettima to Lead Federal Delegation to Kano Over Singer Market Fire

Abuja, February 15, 2026Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Kashim Shettima to lead a high-level Federal Government delegation to Kano State following the devastating fire outbreak at the Singer Market.

The delegation is scheduled to depart Abuja on Monday to convey the President’s condolences to traders affected by the inferno, which reportedly destroyed goods worth billions of naira. The latest incident marks the second major fire at the market within two weeks.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the delegation will also announce federal financial support for victims and collaborate with the Kano State Government to ensure the swift reopening of the market.

Members of the delegation include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; Senator Kawu Ismaila; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Abubakar Kabir Bichi.

Also on the team are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar.

President Tinubu had earlier spoken by telephone with Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to express sympathy with affected traders and residents of the state.

The fire, which began on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning, caused extensive destruction at what is regarded as Nigeria’s largest food market. The President expressed concern that the latest outbreak occurred less than two weeks after a previous fire razed dozens of shops and properties in the same market.

He has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the recurring incidents, citing the need to determine their causes and prevent further losses to traders.
