PRESS STATEMENT
Date: Tuesday 07 April 2025
Today, following a high-level meeting with the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), we express grave concern over the recent actions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which threaten the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and the principle of a fair multiparty system.
INEC’s decision to derecognise duly constituted ADC officials amid ongoing judicial proceedings is deeply troubling. Rather than seeking judicial clarification, the Commission has acted in a manner that appears partisan, arbitrary, and inconsistent with its constitutional mandate, undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with the legitimate leadership of the ADC under Senator David Mark. The party remains committed to lawful, transparent, and democratic engagement in preparation for the 2027 elections, and its leadership must be respected.
We urgently call on INEC to:
• Immediately restore institutional neutrality;
• Adhere strictly to constitutional provisions and judicial rulings;
• Refrain from any action that undermines opposition parties or political pluralism.
The ADC, civil society, and concerned Nigerians will continue to monitor these developments closely. Any further actions that compromise democratic principles will be met with steadfast opposition.
The future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on credible, impartial, and transparent electoral governance. We urge INEC to act responsibly, respect the rule of law, and safeguard the rights of all political actors.
