Tuchel Says Palmer Missing Too Many England Chances

England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed concern over Cole Palmer’s repeated injury-related absences from international camps, saying the Chelsea forward is missing important opportunities to establish himself in the national team.

Palmer was recalled to the England squad earlier this month after being left out of the team’s 2026 World Cup squad, but subsequently withdrew from the latest camp because of a muscle problem. Tuchel said the latest absence represented another missed opportunity for the 24-year-old.

“For sure, it is a missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities,” Tuchel said ahead of England’s Nations League opener against Spain at Wembley on Saturday.

The German coach stressed, however, that he did not blame Palmer for his absence, acknowledging that the player’s repeated withdrawals had been linked to injuries.

“He misses way too many camps with injuries. It’s not his fault,” Tuchel said.

Palmer’s latest setback came only days after Tuchel recalled him to the England squad following his omission from the World Cup.

The Chelsea forward had started the new Premier League campaign strongly, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven appearances before withdrawing from international duty.

Tuchel said his understanding was that Palmer had been playing with discomfort and pain and could not perform at the highest level under those circumstances.

“My understanding is he is playing with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain,” the England manager said.

He added that Palmer informed the relevant parties of his decision to withdraw and that Chelsea also communicated with the England setup.

The latest absence is particularly significant because Palmer had been given another opportunity to impress Tuchel following his omission from England’s World Cup squad.

When announcing Palmer’s recall, Tuchel had pointed to the player’s improved club form, saying his goals and assists had strengthened his case for a return to the national team.

Palmer had previously spoken about his fitness after an injury-disrupted 2025–26 season, saying he felt physically better than he had in a long time and was working to avoid further setbacks.

Tuchel explained that regular participation in England camps was important because it allowed him to assess players directly and observe them within the national-team environment.

“I can only rely on what I witness and see within my team. For that, you have to be in camp,” he said.

The manager added that players who are absent from camp miss an opportunity to demonstrate qualities that cannot necessarily be assessed from their club performances alone.

Palmer’s withdrawal was part of a wider reshuffle in the England squad. Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento also withdrew from the current international window, with Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner called up as replacements.

For Palmer, the timing is notable because his return to form at Chelsea had come after a difficult previous campaign affected by fitness problems. His absence from the World Cup squad had also generated considerable discussion around his place in Tuchel’s plans.

Tuchel’s latest comments suggest that Palmer’s continued availability will remain an important factor in his prospects with England, although the manager explicitly acknowledged that the player’s injuries are not his fault.

England are scheduled to begin their Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley on Saturday, before travelling to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 29 and Croatia on October 3. They will then host the Czech Republic again on October 6.

With Palmer unavailable for the opening fixtures, Tuchel will have to rely on other attacking options as England begin their latest Nations League campaign.

For the Chelsea forward, the immediate priority will be recovering from the latest muscular problem and returning to regular football, while his absence gives other England players an opportunity to compete for positions within Tuchel’s squad.
