A shooting incident reportedly disrupted a meeting involving Peter Obi and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.
According to initial reports, gunshots were fired near the venue where Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, was meeting with ADC chieftains. Details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and authorities have yet to release an official statement confirming casualties or arrests.
In a statement following the incident, the ADC accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being responsible for the attack. The allegation was, however, rejected by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who denied any involvement.
Morka described the accusation as unfounded and instead attributed the incident to what he termed internal leadership struggles within the ADC. He condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation by security agencies to establish the facts and bring those responsible to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, law enforcement authorities in Edo State have not issued a comprehensive update on the situation. The incident has heightened political tensions, with calls from various quarters for calm and a transparent investigation.
