Security Debate: Shehu Gazali Sadiq Questions Reliance on Prayers in Fight Against Terrorism

A Nigerian public commentator, , has stirred debate on social media after drawing a sharp comparison between Saudi Arabia’s security response to external threats and the approach adopted in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.

In a post on his X handle, Sadiq wrote that while relies on advanced defence technology to intercept drones and missiles allegedly linked to , authorities in are calling for prayers to defeat insurgents.

“Saudi Arabia did not call for prayers against Iran drones and missiles. They are defending the country with technology. But Governor Zulum of Borno state is calling for prayer against Boko Haram. You can’t make this stuff up,” he wrote.

The comment appeared to reference recent calls by the Governor of Borno State, , for intensified prayers as part of efforts to overcome the persistent threat posed by the extremist group .

Zulum has repeatedly warned that insurgents are evolving in their tactics, including the reported use of surveillance drones and more sophisticated weapons in attacks across communities in the North-East.

While the governor has consistently called for stronger military action and improved equipment for security forces, his encouragement of spiritual support has drawn mixed reactions from commentators and members of the public.

Sadiq’s remark has therefore reignited the broader national debate on how best to confront terrorism in Nigeria — whether through greater investment in intelligence, surveillance and defence technology, or through a combination of military action and faith-based mobilization.

Security analysts generally agree that modern insurgent threats require advanced technological counter-measures, including drones, electronic surveillance and improved intelligence systems, particularly in regions like Borno where insurgency has persisted for over a decade.

The social media exchange highlights growing public frustration over the prolonged insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East and the urgent demand for more effective and technologically driven security responses.
