Political analyst Ruben Abati has drawn attention to growing tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following statements from rival factions and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the party’s upcoming convention and potential participation in the 2027 presidential election.
Abati noted that the faction aligned with former Senate President David Mark has issued a declaration of defiance, stating that any directives from INEC regarding the ADC’s internal leadership would not be obeyed. The group maintains that INEC has no authority to intervene in party affairs.
In response, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan warned that if the ADC proceeds with its convention under disputed leadership, any electoral victory in the 2027 election may not be recognized. Citing the precedent in Zamfara State, Amupitan indicated that in cases of unresolved leadership disputes, the candidate declared second could be recognized as the winner.
The standoff underscores the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s opposition parties, with analysts warning that unresolved internal disputes could have major implications for party credibility, voter confidence, and the integrity of upcoming elections.
Observers say the ADC crisis will likely remain under intense scrutiny as the party navigates both legal battles and preparations for the 2027 presidential contest.
