The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a prominent All Progressives Congress chieftain, Prince Ikechukwu Oloto, popularly known as “Okanga Mo,” in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
Oloto, aged about 53, was reportedly attacked inside his residence at Odenigbo, Nsukka, on Thursday evening, September 17, 2026. The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the command received a report at about 5:45pm on Thursday that a man had been found in a pool of blood at his residence.
According to Ndukwe, police operatives immediately responded to the report and found Oloto with deep suspected machete cuts to his head and stomach.
He was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention, but the attending doctor confirmed him dead.
The police spokesperson said Oloto’s remains had been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while security operatives had launched a manhunt for the suspected assailant or assailants.
“Investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder of Ikechukwu Oloto,” Ndukwe said.
The killing has generated concern in Nsukka, particularly because of the violent nature of the attack and the fact that it occurred at the victim’s residence.
Oloto was a native of Nsukka Local Government Area and was known as a politician and APC chieftain in the area. Reports circulating before the police confirmation had indicated that he was attacked at his home, although details concerning the identity of the attackers and their possible motive had remained unclear.
Some accounts circulating on social media claimed that a knife was used in the attack. However, the police’s official account described the injuries as deep suspected machete cuts to the head and stomach. The command has not publicly established the weapon used or identified a motive for the killing.
The development comes against the backdrop of recent security concerns and politically related violence reported in parts of Enugu State. Earlier in September, the state police command ordered investigations into separate attacks involving political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
However, there is no indication from the police that Oloto’s killing was politically motivated. Authorities have so far limited their public comments to confirming the death and announcing an investigation and manhunt for those responsible.
The police are expected to rely on evidence gathered from the scene, witness accounts and other investigative leads to establish what happened before, during and after the attack.
The autopsy ordered by the police is also expected to provide further forensic information as investigators work to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding Oloto’s death.
The Enugu State Police Command has urged members of the public who may have useful information about the incident to assist investigators.
Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing, with the identities of the suspected attackers and the motive behind the killing yet to be established publicly.
The police said the manhunt for the perpetrators would continue as efforts are made to bring those responsible for the death of the APC chieftain to justice.
