The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, to discuss issues relating to Nigeria’s democracy, economy and institutional development.
The meeting, held ahead of Dr. Montgomery’s departure from Nigeria at the end of his diplomatic assignment next month, focused on strengthening democratic governance, improving the economy and reinforcing institutions that underpin national development.
According to Obi, their discussions also emphasized the importance of conducting elections that are free, fair, credible and reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.
He stressed that strong democratic institutions and transparent electoral processes remain essential to building public trust and ensuring sustainable national progress.
Obi expressed appreciation to the British High Commissioner for his contributions to Nigeria during his tenure, commending his role in deepening the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
He noted that Dr. Montgomery’s service had been characterised by constructive engagement and consistent support for Nigeria’s democratic development, economic cooperation and institutional strengthening.
The former Anambra State governor thanked the outgoing envoy for the friendship and collaboration extended to Nigeria throughout his diplomatic mission and wished him success in his future assignments.
Obi also expressed optimism that the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom would continue to grow through sustained cooperation in areas such as governance, trade, education, security and economic development.
