Ohanaeze Youth Council Calls for Boycott of Obi Cubana’s Businesses

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has urged Ndigbo across the world to boycott businesses linked to nightlife entrepreneur Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, following remarks the group described as offensive.

According to the council, the call for an economic boycott stems from controversial statements allegedly made by the businessman, in which he was said to have suggested that Ndigbo lack knowledge while also encouraging support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

OYC President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, condemned the remarks as “insulting and unacceptable,” stressing that while individuals are entitled to their political preferences, comments perceived as derogatory toward the Igbo people would not be tolerated.

The group is advocating a non-violent response through economic pressure, calling on the public to avoid patronising businesses under the Cubana brand. Affected ventures reportedly include establishments within the Cubana Group, such as hotels, nightclubs, and other affiliated enterprises.

The development has sparked conversations around freedom of expression, political alignment, and cultural sensitivity, particularly as Nigeria’s political climate begins to heat up ahead of the next general elections.

Observers note that the situation underscores the growing intersection of business influence, regional identity, and political discourse in the country, with potential implications for both brand reputation and public perception.
