Obi Highlights Anambra Legacy as Debate Grows Over Presidential Villa Solar Project

A renewed political debate has emerged on social media following the circulation of a video highlighting projects executed during the tenure of Peter Obi as Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014.

The video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), showcases school buildings, healthcare facilities, and road infrastructure reportedly completed under Obi’s administration. Supporters have pointed to the footage as tangible evidence of his governance record, while challenging backers of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to present comparable documentation of projects undertaken during his time as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, excluding initiatives completed by successor administrations.

The online exchange coincides with Obi’s recent criticism of the Federal Government’s approval of a reported N10 billion solar power installation at the Presidential Villa. The project is intended to reduce the Villa’s electricity costs, reportedly estimated at N47 billion annually.

Obi questioned the optics of the decision, arguing that investing in an independent power solution for the Presidency could be interpreted as a lack of confidence in the national grid at a time when many Nigerians continue to experience persistent blackouts. His remarks have intensified public discussion about energy policy, governance priorities, and fiscal management.

Supporters of President Tinubu, however, have defended his record both as a former Lagos governor and as the current head of state. They cite reforms in tax administration, institutional restructuring, and the groundwork for major urban transport initiatives during his tenure in Lagos. Advocates also argue that the solar installation reflects a cost-saving and sustainability measure rather than a retreat from broader power sector reforms.

The exchange underscores deepening political divisions as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections. Analysts note that governance records at the state level are increasingly being scrutinised as benchmarks for national leadership aspirations.

With both leaders commanding strong and loyal followings, debates over infrastructure delivery, fiscal responsibility, and energy strategy are likely to remain central themes in the evolving political landscape.
