The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process, with the Director-General stating that the agency is ready to provide the necessary identity management services to facilitate free, fair and credible elections.
The assurance was given during a stakeholders’ engagement where the NIMC leadership highlighted the critical role of a reliable national identity system in promoting transparency, accountability and efficiency in the country’s democratic process.
According to the Director-General, the commission’s identity database and digital verification infrastructure have the capacity to complement electoral administration by enhancing the integrity of voter identification and reducing the risk of identity-related fraud.
The NIMC boss noted that collaboration between government institutions remains essential in ensuring that elections are conducted in accordance with the principles of fairness and credibility. He added that the commission stands prepared to provide technical support whenever required by the electoral management body within the framework of existing laws and constitutional provisions.
The Director-General stressed that a robust national identity system contributes significantly to democratic governance by enabling accurate citizen verification and improving the delivery of public services. He explained that the increasing enrollment of Nigerians into the National Identity Number (NIN) database has created opportunities for more efficient identity authentication across multiple sectors.
While reiterating the commission’s readiness to work with INEC, the NIMC leadership emphasised that any collaboration would respect the constitutional independence of the electoral commission. The agency maintained that its role would be limited to providing identity verification support and other technical services where legally applicable.
Election experts have long advocated stronger integration of identity management systems with electoral processes as a means of improving voter registration, preventing duplicate records and enhancing confidence in election outcomes. They argue that secure identity verification can help reduce administrative errors while strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.
However, analysts also caution that any use of national identity data in elections must be guided by clear legal frameworks, strict data protection measures and robust cybersecurity safeguards to protect citizens’ personal information from misuse or unauthorised access.
Civil society organisations have welcomed the willingness of government agencies to cooperate in improving electoral administration but stressed that institutional collaboration must always preserve the operational independence of INEC. They noted that transparent procedures and public confidence remain essential ingredients of credible elections.
The development comes as preparations gradually intensify for future electoral activities across the country. Political observers believe that advancements in digital identity management and technology will continue to play an increasingly important role in modernising Nigeria’s electoral system and improving the efficiency of election administration.
The NIMC also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding National Identity Number enrollment nationwide to ensure that more Nigerians are captured in the national database. Officials said increased registration would not only improve access to government services but also strengthen national planning, financial inclusion and digital governance initiatives.
As Nigeria continues efforts to deepen its democratic institutions, stakeholders maintain that closer cooperation between agencies such as NIMC and INEC, supported by appropriate legal safeguards and technological innovation, could contribute significantly to the conduct of transparent, peaceful and credible elections that reflect the will of the electorate.
