Niger State in Crisis: Basic Needs Neglected Amid Political Pageantry, #1k palliative

Niger State is currently grappling with acute shortages of water and persistent lack of electricity, leaving residents struggling with daily survival. Amid these pressing challenges, a video has gone viral showing the lawmaker  Abubakar Abdul Buba Abubakar representing Chanchaga at the National Assembly distributing ₦1,000 to women and some elderly citizens, with cameras capturing their reactions. While the gesture may appear charitable, critics argue that such token handouts do little to address systemic problems affecting the state.
Meanwhile, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has been busy emphasizing slogans like “On your mandate we shall stand,” seemingly detached from the worsening humanitarian situation. Citizens are forced to contend with water scarcity, unreliable electricity, hunger, and rising insecurity, yet government priorities continue to favor high-profile projects such as needless flyovers.

Analysts and civil society advocates insist that the resources being poured into symbolic infrastructure could have been redirected to address urgent human needs—ensuring functional primary healthcare centers, improving access to clean water, and stabilizing power supply across the state. The disconnect between political posturing and the daily realities of Niger State residents highlights a growing gap between governance rhetoric and public welfare, raising serious questions about accountability and effective leadership.
Until immediate interventions are made, the people of Niger State continue to bear the brunt of policy mismanagement, with basic survival needs left largely unmet.
