Nigerian singer Mr 2Kay has revealed that a dispute over ₦10 million in compensation following a 2017 robbery and assault incident contributed to his decision to leave his former record label.
The singer, whose real name is Abiye Jumbo, made the disclosure during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos. He alleged that Eko Hotel and Suites paid him ₦10 million after the incident, but his record label gave him only ₦2 million.
“When Burna Boy sent boys to beat me up in Eko Hotel, the boys attacked me and ended up robbing me. Eko Hotel later compensated me with N10 million but my record label gave me only N2 million out of it. So, I left the record label,” he said.
The allegation has renewed public interest in the incident and raised questions about how compensation payments are handled between musicians and their management teams. The former label’s explanation for the alleged distribution was not included in the reports, and the claim has not been independently verified.
The attack occurred on October 22, 2017, after Mr 2Kay performed at the Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless concert at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. He was reportedly assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in his hotel room.
The incident led to a police investigation involving several suspects, including a member of Burna Boy’s management team. Burna Boy was subsequently investigated and faced court proceedings over allegations connected to the case. The allegations should not be treated as proof of guilt.
Mr 2Kay later withdrew the case after Burna Boy apologised. In 2021, the two musicians were seen together at a Lagos nightclub, suggesting that their public dispute had eased.
Beyond revisiting the old controversy, Mr 2Kay’s account highlights the financial and contractual challenges that can arise in the music industry when artists depend on record labels to manage their earnings and other payments.
The singer has since moved into music management and executive work, describing the business side of the industry as lucrative.
