The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to publish the names and particulars of candidates contesting the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections in the 2027 general elections, marking another major step towards Nigeria’s next nationwide electoral contest.
The commission has scheduled Saturday, August 29, 2026, for the publication of the candidates’ particulars, according to its revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections.
The publication is expected to provide voters with official information on the candidates nominated by political parties for the governorship and legislative contests across the states.
The exercise is part of INEC’s statutory responsibility to make candidates’ personal particulars and academic credentials available to the public. The commission had earlier published similar information for presidential and National Assembly candidates on August 2.
Under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2026, INEC is required to publish the relevant particulars contained in Form EC9 within 21 days of receiving the nomination documents from political parties.
The forthcoming publication comes after political parties completed the nomination process for governorship and State Assembly candidates.
INEC had initially fixed August 8 as the deadline for parties to upload their candidates’ lists but subsequently extended the deadline to August 11 following appeals from political parties for additional time to complete the process.
The extension was expected to give parties additional time to resolve outstanding issues surrounding nominations and ensure that the information submitted to the electoral commission was complete.
With the publication of the lists, political parties and candidates will move closer to the formal campaign period for the governorship and State Assembly elections.
INEC’s official campaign timetable provides that campaigns for the governorship and State Assembly elections will commence on December 15, 2026, and end on March 5, 2027.
The publication will also provide an important opportunity for voters, civil society organisations, journalists and other stakeholders to scrutinise the credentials and particulars submitted by candidates.
This is particularly significant given the increasing political competition across the country as parties position themselves for the 2027 elections.
Several major political parties have already begun strengthening their structures and mobilising supporters ahead of the polls. The governing All Progressives Congress is intensifying its grassroots mobilisation, while opposition parties are also working to consolidate their candidates and electoral structures.
The governorship elections will be particularly significant because state governors wield considerable influence over security, infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic development within their respective states.
The State Assembly elections will also determine the composition of the legislative arms of state governments and could significantly affect the relationship between governors and their assemblies.
INEC’s publication of the candidates’ particulars therefore represents more than an administrative requirement. It gives the electorate an opportunity to begin assessing the individuals seeking to occupy some of the most influential elected positions in the country.
Political parties whose candidates’ names appear on the list will also have a clearer basis for commencing preparations for the formal campaign season.
The commission has repeatedly stressed the importance of compliance with electoral laws and its timetable as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
The publication comes at a time when scrutiny of the electoral process is increasing, with political parties and voters demanding greater transparency from INEC.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, Saturday’s publication is expected to provide voters with a clearer picture of the candidates who will compete for control of the states and their legislative chambers.
The exercise will consequently mark another important milestone in the long road to the 2027 general elections, with political campaigns expected to become increasingly intense in the months ahead.
