The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an adjustment to its timetable for the 2027 general elections, extending the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members.
In a press release issued from its headquarters in Abuja, the Commission disclosed that the decision followed concerns raised during a meeting with political parties held on March 24, 2026. The original submission window, earlier scheduled from April 1 to April 21, 2026, has now been revised.
According to the statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the adjustment aligns with provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates a 21-day notice period before party primaries.
INEC stated that political parties are now permitted to conduct their primaries within the period of April 23 to May 30, 2026. Consequently, parties must submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their respective primaries.
The Commission further clarified that the final deadline for the submission of party membership registers has been extended to May 10, 2026, replacing the earlier deadline of April 21, 2026.
INEC emphasized that strict adherence to the revised timetable is crucial to ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
